Today, we lost a music legend. George Jones was not just a legend of country music, his influence crossed a wide range of genres.
Here he is appearing on the Johnny Cash Show:
Like his compadres, Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings, who went before him, "The Possum" liked the hard partying lifestyle back in the day. He once drove a riding lawnmower eight miles for booze when his wife hid his car keys. He also earned the nickname "No Show Jones" after missing concerts due to his affection for the firewater.
Despite his vices, however, Mr. Jones' talent was undeniable. He was a giant within the music industry and admired by millions of fans, as well as his peers. Merle Haggard said of Jones' passing: "The world may have lost the greatest country singer that ever lived."
He'll be missed. Now that there are only a few country legends left: Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, Loretta Lynn, Kris Kristofferson, Dolly Parton, and Charley Pride come to mind. Let's treasure these folks while we still can.
