Best Tunes of 2014

Because I can't get enough of year end Top 10 lists, I feel the need to create my own each year, based on the jams that made my face melt, or had some other profound effect, during the course of the year.

By the way, the following list, in no way, represents the musical preferences of other Hey! Makers, although it should, cause these albums are freaking sweet!

Top 10 Albums of 2014

10. Beck - Morning Phase - Mr. Hansen successfully returns to his Sea Change style. Beautifully produced album.

09. Hamilton Leithauser - Black Hours - The former frontman for the Walkmen weighs in with a smoky album that made the Walkmen's break slightly less painful ... slightly.

08. Sharon Van Etten - Are We There - Continues her string of outstanding songwriting with her best album yet.

07. Drive-By Truckers - English Oceans - These fellas from Alabama do nothing but release excellent albums. No one captures the South with more accuracy and honesty than DBT.

06. Chuck Prophet - Night Surfer - I've heard Chuck's music describes as "smart rock". Couldn't think of a better description. Intelligent lyrics punctuated with solid rock rhythms.

05. Sturgill Simpson - Metamodern Sounds in Country Music - Waylon Jennings could have recorded this album in the 70's. Sturgill restored my faith that true country music might ... just might ... not be quite dead yet.

04. Jack White - Lazaretto - One of the few remaining genuine ROCK STARS. Jack's 2nd solo album is a monster of diverse musical styles.

03. The Afghan Whigs - Do to the Beast - 2014 marked the official return of one of my all-time favorite bands. This album, their first in 16 years, picks up where they left off. Anyway, Greg Dulli never disappoints.

02. Spoon - They Want My Soul - Their first hard driving rock record since Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga. Deserves to be turned up to 11.

01. The War on Drugs - Lost in the Dream - When folks would ask me to describe this album, I found myself dropping names like Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, and Tom Petty. Given that, how could it not be my album of the year?

Outside Lookin' In:

11. Peter Matthew Bauer - Liberation!
12. Reigning Sound - Shattered
13. The Men - Tomorrow's Hits
14. Steve Gunn - Way Out Weather
15. Jenny Lewis - The Voyager
